XXI Olympic Winter Games in Beautiful Vancouver British Columbia.
The XXI edition of the Winter Olympics will be hosted and played out in the picturesque city Vancouver British Columbia during the Winter of 2010 between the dates of 12 and 28 of February.
The city of Vancouver was selected by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) over other entries which included Pyeongchang South Korea and Salzburg Austria. This was the third time Vancouver had presented its entry to be a candidate for the Winter Olympic Games, and its also the third time a Canadian city has been selected to host Olympic Games, after Montreal 1976 and Calgary 1988. The costs of the Vancouver Winter Olympic Games is estimated to be of 1.4 billion Canadian Dollars.
The mascots for the 2010 Winter Olympic Games and Paralympic Games are traditional First Nations mythical creatures:
Miga is a metamorphosis between a bear and orca whale. Official Mascot.
Quatchi is a mythological character similar to sasquatch. Official Mascot.
Sumi is another mythical character that is a legend in the First nations stories, its an animal that has wings of a bird and legs of a bear, it also wears a hat of an orca whale.
Mukmuk is a Marmot, not an official mascot but a sidekick.
The games will count with Olympic Venues in Vancouver, Richmond, West Vancouver, and Whistler.
Vancouver:
BC Place Stadium. Built in 1983 to showcase in the 1986 World Expo fair, it was Canada's first domed stadium and its the World's largest air supported structure. This venue will hold the opening and closing ceremonies and also the metal presentations.
Vancouver Olympic Village. A new development to be completed in time for the games. Plans are for 600 accommodation units on a 600,000 square feet lot, this will be the primary resting location for the 3,000 athletes.
Vancouver Convention and Exhibition Centre. Canada's largest convention center will be the media platform for the Vancouver Winter Olympic Games.
GM Place. General Motors Place (The garage), home of the Vancouver Canucks. This venue will host most of the Ice Hockey games.
Pacific Coliseum will host the Figure Skating and Short Track events.
Hillcrest Park will hold the Curling events.
UBC Winter Sports Centre. New development to be located in the main campus of the University. Men's and women's secondary hockey venue.
Richmond:
Richmond Olympic Oval. Currently being build at an estimated cost of 180 million dollars, it location is riverside to the Fraser River. All speed skating events will be held at this location.
West Vancouver:
Cypress Mountain Resort. A well known west vancouver ski area on the south side of Cypress Provincial Park. Freestyle skiing, snowboarding, and ski croos events will take place at this location.
Whistler:
Whistler Olympic and Paralympic Village
Whistler Creekside. Alpine skiing events.
Whistler Olympic Park. Biathlon, cross country skiing, and ski jumping events.
Whistler Sliding Centre. Bobsleigh, luge, and skeleton events.
